Why now, and why you?

A statement on moving from animation into interaction design, and on why socially meaningful service experiences became the direction worth committing to.

Before coming to Emily Carr, my undergraduate major was animation, where I studied courses such as character design and environment design. These experiences provided me with a solid foundation in visual storytelling and artistic expression. Later, when I was introduced to interaction design, I became deeply drawn to the field of service design. Unlike one-directional visual expression, service design emphasizes solving real problems and creating value for others. This human-centred approach allowed me to realize, for the first time, that design could make a tangible social impact, which brought me an unprecedented sense of fulfillment and purpose. Therefore, I aspire to integrate my artistic background with the development of new technologies, applying design to socially meaningful contexts, particularly to create warm and valuable service experiences for people with disabilities or communities in need.

Key topics, materials, processes

I want to explore themes around the relationship between people and technology, and how design can strengthen belonging and reduce distance. My practice will use digital interfaces, web prototypes, and animation to turn abstract ideas of culture and memory into tangible experiences. I will approach this through user research, prototyping, and testing, constantly trying things out and tweaking them until they feel right for people.

What do you hope to uncover or challenge, and what constitutes success?

For me, success means two things: finding a job I truly love, and creating designs that genuinely help people. Over the next two years, I want to keep challenging myself, try different directions, and discover the area that fits me best.
